Renewable Generation Over Takes Nuclear In The Uk

Renewable Generation Over Takes Nuclear In The Uk
SOLAR PV power generation in the UK soared by 93% year-on-year in 2014 and reached 3.9TWh, according to new figures released by the Department for Energy and Climate Change today.

TOTAL RENEWABLE ENERGY GENERATION increased by 20% in 2014 to 64.4TWh with solar PV reporting the greatest increase among all renewable energy types compared to last year.

The 3.9TWh figure is approximately 6.1% OF THE UK'S TOTAL RENEWABLE ENERGY generation in 2014.

RENEWABLES generated a record 19.2 PER CENT OF UK ELECTRICITY last year, OVERTAKING NUCLEAR POWER at 19%. The amount of electricity produced by COAL-FIRED power plants account for just over 29 PER CENT of UK electricity in 2014, compared to over 36 per cent in 2013.

This meant GAS was the UK's largest producer of electricity last year, accounting for 30.2 PER CENT of the total mix - up from 26.6 per cent in 2013.

DECC also revealed that UK EMISSIONS FELL 8.4% IN 2014, a figure which Friends of the Earth climate campaigner Guy Shrubsole said was "encouraging news" as clean solar energy "skyrocketed" on tumbling prices.

"BUT THIS DOESN'T MEAN WE SHOULD REST ON OUR LAURELS - the government should build on the momentum and set more targets for getting off fossil fuels faster.

"WE SHOULD BE MASSIVELY RAMPING UP OUR AMBITION AHEAD OF THIS YEAR'S UN CLIMATE TALKS," Shrubsole added.

Dr Doug Parr, chief scientist at GREENPEACE UK, said the figures gave a "TASTE OF WHAT COULD BE ACHIEVED" if policy makers started to phase out the dirtiest of fossil fuels and backed clean energy.

"Last year UK carbon emissions fell dramatically whilst the economy grew faster than it has in any year since 2007," Parr added. "THIS IS FURTHER EVIDENCE, IF IT WAS NEEDED, THAT EFFORTS TO CUT CARBON POLLUTION AND BOOST OUR ECONOMY CAN GO HAND IN HAND."
