Renewable energy is getting acknowledgement from people and they are willing to adopt renewable technologies if given the right opportunity, says a new survey report by WWF-India.
The report- 'People's Perception Study: Renewable Energy in India 2014'- states that nearly 55 people surveyed haven't used any renewable energy applications but more than 95 per cent of them are willing to adopt RE technologies when given the right opportunity.
The report was released at a public discussion on understanding perceptions and solutions on renewable energy, organized by WWF-India. About 92 per cent of the people surveyed feel that solar energy has great potential in India, with solar water heaters (SWH) being the most popular RE application. The Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM) is the most well known government initiative among individuals. However, around 68 per cent of the people could not name any policy or scheme.
The issues discussed at the forum underlined the major barriers faced by people in adopting renewable technologies, and the possible solutions. The study revealed the common perception that renewable energy technologies are costly and do not meet total energy demands. About 68 per cent of the respondents consider high initial cost of RE technologies as a barrier in adopting it.
The event also saw release of a user-friendly booklet titled 'Renewables for Lifestyle Shift' that gives basic information on various RE applications in India. The event was attended by representatives from RWAs, practitioners, students, media, government, civil society, renewable energy manufacturers, students and teachers.
