Zachry Engineerings Nacogdoches Generating Facility Wins Best Bioenergy Project Of The Year For Power Engineering Magazine

The Nacogdoches Generating Facility, engineered by Zachry Engineering and owned by Southern Co., was named The Best Bioenergy Project of the Year by Power Engineering Magazine, announced at the annual POWER-GEN International conference in Dec., 2012.

The detailed engineering and design services for this 100-MW greenfield biomass project included plant layout; detailed balance of plant (BOP) engineering; procurement specifications; technical bid evaluation; field engineering; checkout, startup and training; and as-built documentation.

"This was a great honor," said Peter Quist. "We are pleased with the success of the project, and look forward to designing more technologically advanced biomass projects in the future. Many thanks go to our skilled engineers, the craft workers on site and Southern Co."

Construction began in late 2009, with the unit being turned over for commercial operation in 2012. The plant is currently the largest single unit biomass facility in North America. The woody biomass plant uses a bubbling fluidized bed boiler (BFB); selective non-catalytic reduction (SNCR); and an axial flow steam turbine and condenser.
